Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System IMS | Aena

In order to fulfil the commitments set out in the Integrated Management Policy for Quality, Environment, Energy Efficiency and Health and Safety at Work, Aena has driven forward the implementation, maintenance and certification of its Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System in accordance with the international standards ISO 9001, 14001 and 50001.

The IMS enables us to:

  • Improve efficiency in quality, environment and energy efficiency management, thereby helping senior management decision-making and the definition of the organisation’s overall programmes and strategies in these areas.
  • Understand the characteristics of the natural environment in which Aena’s units and centres are located, as well as transport-related activities that affect their conservation.

All of this is achieved through a process of continuous improvement in which we analyse our environmental impact and devise solutions to minimise negative effects on the environment, thereby ensuring the sustainability of our operations.

By monitoring environmental and energy-related aspects, environmental management processes help to reduce atmospheric emissions, ensure the quality of discharges, reduce noise pollution, ensure the proper treatment and recycling of waste generated, ensure the efficient use of natural and energy resources, and contribute to the conservation of ecosystems.

Furthermore, Integrated Management System certification ensures compliance with the requirements set out in the relevant international standards, as well as regular verification of the extent to which current environmental and energy legislation is being upheld.

The effectiveness of the Integrated Quality and Environmental Management System depends on everyone’s commitment and involvement. For this reason, Aena runs training and awareness-raising campaigns to inform and engage staff at the various units and centres, companies operating within them and users themselves, so that they are familiar with the IMS, with a view to ensuring that the natural environment is respected.

Since July 2014, the Integrated Management System has been certified by AENOR, building on the individual quality and environmental certifications held by Aena units and centres.

A number of airports have also joined the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), including Tenerife South and Menorca airports, as a result of the transparent and efficient management of their environmental systems, thereby facilitating and promoting the sustainable development of their activities.
