Strategic noise maps and Action Plans

A Strategic Noise Map (SRM) aims to assess overall noise exposure in a given area due to the existence of different noise sources, or to be able to make global predictions for that area in order to produce a common diagnosis of the overall noise situation in the European Union.

Its preparation and management is regulated by Directive 2002/49/EC of 25 June relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise, as well as by Law 37/2003, of 17 November, on Noise and implementing Royal Decrees 1513/2005, 1367/2007 and 1038/2012.

The aforementioned regulation stipulates that Strategic Noise Maps must be drawn up and reviewed every 5 years for major airports, understood as civil airports with more than 50,000 annual movements, counting both take-offs and landings, and excluding movements solely for the purposes of light aircraft training.

The Directive also requires Member States to draw up Noise Action Plans (NAPs) for major airports to address noise and its effects on their territory, including noise abatement if necessary. The lines of work of the Action Plans are developed in accordance with the concept of a "balanced approach" established by ICAO.

In accordance with applicable legal requirements, Aena makes all the documentation prepared for the different phases of the SRMs and NAPs of its major airports available to the public.
